GOP Turns its Back on Hispanic People of Faith - no room at the inn

According to a report in The Boston Globe, it looks like the GOP and evangelicals on the religious right would rather do without the possible pick-up of lots of new socially conservative voters if doing so requires them to give undocumented immigrants who obey new immigration laws and individuals participating in proposed guestworker programs a chance to earn citizenship. With the vast majority of those affected by this rigid stance hailing from Latin America, it makes you wonder just how big the Grand Ole Party's tent really is when it comes to Hispanics.

We already knew Republicans like Tom Tancredo, James Sensenbrenner and Senator Jeff Sessions weren't on board with embracing the Hispanic community. But even President Bush and Senator John McCain would foreclose the possibility to earn citizenship for law-abiding Hispanics who come here to work. Now it appears the so-called Christian right is closing the doors on Hispanics, too. Even James Dobson, who heads Focus on the Family, is refusing to comment on the immigration issue.

Dobson would do well to study the GOP's immigration legislation-or face potentially dire consequences if his church made the mistake of extending basic Christian charity to those in need, without regard to their immigration status. The L.A. Times reported last weekthat H.R. 4437, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives, would require churches and other social service organizations to ask immigrants for legal documentation before providing assistance and would penalize them if they refuse to do so.

It's time for the Republican Party to quit playing wedge politics with Hispanics.
