In the Sunshine State, Fred Thompson Strolls Along the Campaign Trail

December 10, 2007

Fred Thompson continues to stroll along the campaign trail in the Sunshine State today, with one public event at the Bay of Pigs museum in Miami. With less than a 163month until voting begins, Fred has done little to quell speculation that he lacks the motivation, vision, or interest to become president, and last week drew some laughs when his campaign released a daily schedule that consisted of only three radio interviews. It's no wonder that the latest Quinnipiac poll finds him in fourth place among the Republican presidential candidates in Florida. Fred's visit to the Bay of Pigs museum comes as the struggling candidate tries to mend fences with the Cuban American community he insulted earlier in the year, but which is important to the GOP primary. In June, Thompson decried the flow of Cubans arriving in the U.S. ignoring the fact they're fleeing the Castro Regime and suggesting instead that they would bring suitcase bombs into the US. During a speech, Thompson "decried the flow of illegal immigrants from Cuba, saying: 'I don't imagine they're coming here to bring greetings from Castro. We're living in the era of the suitcase bomb.'" [Associated Press, 6/27/07]

"With so few days left until voting begins, you'd think Fred Thompson's campaign would be in high gear," said Democratic National Committee Press Secretary Stacie Paxton. "No wonder his campaign has never really taken off--voters are clearly unsure what kind of a leader he would be if he's unwilling to put in the hard work to run for president."
