Looks to me like chimp has appointed himself dictator. He has apparently rebuffed Congress again and used his executive privilege contention.

If it goes to the SCROTUM, it will just be rubberstamped by his buddy scalia.

We are screwed!

As a result, I predict there will be very deep despair in the trenches and violence may be the outcome.

JohnE...Still rain every afternoon....too much....we now have 59 bridges in the area that have erosion, based washed away making them of questionable stability. Same deal,Bush pissing all of our money away on Bush's Folly and letting our country go to hell..........

"That bridge collapse in Minneapolis was the direct result of liberal dopiness. They spend all of the states transportation on idiotic electric trains to save the earth and nothing on maintaining roads and bridges."

Dopey really outdid him/herself on that one. Now the repukes derilection of duty to America is starting to kill innocent Americans going about their daily commute. They are already guilty of the Twin Towers and Pentagon atrocities and they continue to thirst for more American blood.

IMPEACH CHENEY AND HIS ILLITERATE PUPPET BUSH!

I am predicting that bush's refusal to send KKKarl to the hearings will result in bush's poll ratings going below 20%.

It is extremely un-American of anyone to support bush and cheney.

They must be brought to justice! It is our Country and we demand it!

JohnBoy,

That's a lot of bridges in danger and that's just your part of Texas. Is your governor going to go after relief money to save the bridges from total failure?

We have had just a little rain every afternoon, just enough to cool it down some. I understand their is a dry spell to the north.

Hey, some of you guys are engineers. A LARGE part of the old Route 66 through Illinois has been closed to truck traffic for a number of years because the bridges over some gravel quarries are so deteriorated that they can't handle the weight, Some bridges elsewhere in the area have had a "quick fix" done to them consisting of installing thick steel "bounce panels" so that if cars go plummeting into the river, they will hit an angled wall and "bounce" to solid ground instead of blocking the shipping lanes.

Pretty ingenious, no?

(NO!)

The closing of the Rte. 66 bridges meant that the factories couldn't get the needed supplies on time, and the trucks had to do a weird circuitous route through residential areas in order to get to the loading docks, so Reynolds Aluminum, GM, and a LOT of other manufacturing plants basically gave up and closed down operations, laying off SEVERAL THOUSAND Union employees. Most of the land is now considered "brown space" that needs extensive environmental clean up before it can be re-used, and the rest has been turned into Big Box shopping Centers featuring Wal-Marts and Home Depots.

Of course, the former Union workers who USED TO live in the area are all gone, and the ones who stayed are too broke to shop anywhere else except for Wally World. Home Depot isn't doing too good, though. Most of the homes are rapidly falling apart, and have been turned into rental properties, which (of course) the renters don't give a hoot about fixing up.

Heck of a job, CHIMPY!!

All this because of ONE weak bridge that we can't afford to fix because we are spending 12 BILLION BUCKS a MONTH in Little Chimpy's fantasyland.

DPD on August 2, 2007 at 08:12 AM

JohnE...Cheney/Bush think they have it all wired up. After they stage their phony "flag attack" on our country (probably a faked attack by Iran on our ships on the Gulf) they will declare martial law, attack Iran and start rounding up all the people who have spoken or written in opposition to their Iraq boondoggle. They will do this because they are certain that the "Surpremes" will side with them. What they are going to be surprised by is the fact that due to Bush's Folly in Iraq, they don't have enough military left to enforce the roundup. If Bush tries this, there will be open rebellion in the streets and he and his criminal cronies may well find themselves swinging from the Cherry trees in Washington, I hope it does not come to this but it may well. The arrogant fools may force it.

13
goodfoe on August 2, 2007 at 08:12 AM

JohnBoy,

They think the world is some giant video game that they have to win at any cost.

I agree, I think that if they keep up this crap there will open rebellion in the streets. The patience of the people is wearing down.

hicrimesandmisdemeanors,

We certainly aren't leaving but I'll bet bush and cheney are planning to leave to avoid international indictments from the Hague. They will go to countries like Dubai and Paraguay.

We cannot let them get away.

Has all this dislocation happened since chimp was appointed president? That is really obscene what he has done.

Our infrastructure nationally is really suffering with this administration. chimp is too cheap to spend a dime on our infrastructure. "privatize it" is his mantra which really sucks.

We must IMPEACH NOW!

15

Meanwhile, our ports are NOT secure, our airports are NOT secure, our rail system is obsolete and NOT secure, our electrical grid is obsolete and NOT secure, 25% of our children live in poverty and our inner cities are crumbling and our senior citizen are being raped on prescription cost, and, most Americans do NOT have quality health care at realistic, affordable prices. All this while Bush Co has pissed away 500 billion on his folly in Iraq. Not to mention that, before we get out of Iraq, we will suffer at least 4000 dead. These arrogant cowards love blood as long as it isn't their blood or the blood of THEIR children.......

Good morning all,

Jacque, uh oh, does that mean Steve won't come to the wedding? too bad, I am sure he would have brought a lovely gift! hahaha

He claims he is not mentally ill, yet he is up all night long posting hatred on an opposing view blog? Now what part of THAT is mentally stable? He is like the weasal, prefers to slither in under the cover of darkness, but we all know Who he is and Where he is. There is a little star on the Yahoo map right where his shack lies.

Oh, and he knows DAMN well that it was not me he faxed that Mensa certificate to, and that it was LYN (another 'friend')who tracked down all the info on him. INCLUDING the fact he took the Lake Woebegon on line test. You got a picture of this rube attending a Mensa meeting ? (A test of logistics, nothing else. A test that most people dabble with in Readers Digest, pass, and that is enough for them. Their Egos do not need to pursue it further.)
I wonder how far the Porko in Tuscon would ever get on that Mensa test, even cheating on the Online one----hahahaha.

Hate will fester within you until you are consumed. Fear will well up and cause you to lose your mind.

Jacq, this is True. I KNOW a guy who burned himself out with hate, anger, negativeism and was dead at the age of 55. He was warned by physicians that he was doing it to his inner self, but continued anyways. Steve will not last much longer, believe me. He has already lost his mind.

Hey, that MN bridge was something. They WARNED the lardass in Twin Cities to stay off of it, but he must have driven over it anyways, and look what he caused ! He must have been diving and fishing for wallets last night from those who went into the Miss. River and drowned. saving up for a pool, I understand. :)

DPD, you got a picture of the troll in court, trying to bring charges against you for child molestation charges? Wonder what the jury and an attorney will think of his aliases, his posts, his boasts of beating up men and pushing them down escalators. That he has his daughter sitting next to him posting filth too.

I will fly there to watch that court case, believe me!! Keep me informed when it happens.

For our misguided DLC brethren:

Thinking Points Discussion: Model of Left and Right Falls Flat

Conservative strategists have successfully shifted political discourse in their favor. Progressives can shift the debate back by understanding how the political mind works. In order to do so, however, it is necessary to move beyond the faulty idea that there is a horizontal political spectrum from left to center to right.

This is the first of a three part series, to be published over the next few days. Part 2 dissects the metaphors behind traditional political strategies based on the political spectrum of left-right politics - including an updated version of the Overton Window discussion withdrawn from Rockridge Nation for revision two weeks ago. Part 3 presents the real strategy used by conservatives to shift debate in their favor and offers guidance for progressives to turn the tide.

...Progressives who “move to the right” are accepting forms of conservative thought in doing so. When they express these conservative views, they activate conservative views in biconceptuals, which is counterproductive. Moving to the right is a losing proposition....

"Dick Cheney and George Bush have, with cunning, malice, forethought, and criminal intent, attempted to subvert the Constitution of The United States and have attempted to destroy rights guaranteed to every American by The Bill of Rights.

The Founding Fathers of this great nation foresaw that a time might come when tyrants attempted to seize power and destroy our Democracy. In their wisdom, the Founding Fathers gave us a method of dealing with this situation without having to resort to armed force. It is called IMPEACHMENT.

It is time for the House of Representatives to step up and do their sworn duty “to protect the American People from all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

There are those who will say that this will not allow Congress to take care of other aspects of the peoples business. There is no other single thing that is more important than defending our Constitutional Rights. And as far a taking care of other aspects of the peoples business, Congress needs “to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time”

Dick Cheney would be a good person to start the impeachment proceeding on. Since he has removed himself from the Executive Branch of government, “Executive Privilege” will not apply.

Hillary, Edwards, and others, why did you not do your homework on Iraq? What was so important that Bush controlled your Intelligence. I share your disdain and disgust for the DLC, gregL.

Their overall mission and goals are NOT those of nor for the American people. Just because a Democrat may not believe in Abortion , does not make him a Centrist. Nor if they feel all Americans should be armed.
There are plenty of Republicans (especially women) who BELIEVE in Abortion and have had them) There are those I am sure who abhor guns. The thing is, they do not talk about their views nor say they are 'centrist' Republicans.

It is interesting that the Republicans have no "RLC" nor centrist organization for their members. They all stick to the party platform, lock step like good little nazis, and it is that unity that brought about their sucess in taking the majority.

We cannot allow them to continue to Frame us with their distortions and slant. We must break out and use new frames like Progressive instead of liberal which they have made into a dirty word.

Pam, I don't know where he gets his rants. HE is the one who posted HIS (old) info, and HE is the one who steals people's user ID's and posts "insults" about HIMSELF in order to threaten people off this blog. (See my ref to FOS and , although I didn't mention it, I also have copies of him posting using Rick C's user ID.)

He's basically crying out for attention. If ANYTHING happens to that innocent couple that pUSs, turd, "Harpo" and Stevie have anointed as their target, Stevie will be getting more attention than he ever dreamed possible. The Dooper Troopers don't mess around. There are a LOT of rich folks around here, and the County cops are the "shoot first, cover up later" types who think NOTHING of sending innocent people to Death Row just to make a point that Rich is RIGHT!! (In every sense of the word).

All these assholes have to do is stop the harassment of strangers just for fun. Thumbass found out what it's like, and has since (not so mysteriously) put a cork in it. I guess having a file (web site, pictures, etc.) sent to the cops would have that effect on some people.

(People who know when to quit. I doubt that Stevie is mature enough to grasp the concept, though.)

Good morning, all.

Here's an interesting read.

When Time Magazine, one of Bush crime family's chief apologists, is running stories like this one, you know there is absolutely no faith among the GOP faithful any more.

Why Bush Won't Ax Gonzales
Thursday, Aug. 02, 2007
By MASSIMO CALABRESI

If cabinet members were perishable goods, Alberto Gonzales would have passed his "sell by" date sometime last spring.

Since January, when he first faced sharp questioning over the firing of U.S. Attorneys, the Attorney General has earned disastrous reviews for his inconsistent testimony, poor judgment and for appearing to place loyalty to the White House above service to the public. By June it was hard to find a Republican willing to defend him. Now Gonzales' dissembling testimony about a controversial domestic-spying program has raised suspicions about what he is hiding and fueled new calls for him to go...

Yet the embattled Gonzales' grip on his job seems unshakable...

So why the extraordinary support for Gonzales in the face of a protracted meltdown at the Department of Justice (DOJ)? Here are four reasons why Bush can't afford to let Gonzales go:

1. Gonzales is all that stands between the White House and special prosecutors...
"Bush needs someone at Justice who's going to watch the White House's back," says a Senate Democratic Judiciary Committee staffer. If Gonzales steps down, Bush would lose his most reliable shield.

2. A post-Gonzales DOJ would be in the hands of a nonpartisan, tough prosecutor, not a political hand. Newly appointed Deputy Attorney General Craig Morford is in line to take over until a new Attorney General could be confirmed....The unprecedented coziness that once existed between the Justice Department and the White House now remains solely in the person of Gonzales.

3. If Gonzales goes, the White House fears that other losses will follow...Congressional judiciary committees have already subpoenaed Harriet Miers and Karl Rove in the firings of U.S. Attorneys last year... Stonewalling, they believe, is their best way to avoid another election focused on corruption issues.

4. Nobody at the White House wants the legal bills and headaches that come with being a target of investigations. In backing Gonzales, Bush is influenced by advisers whose future depends on the survival of their political bodyguard...

//www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1649013,00.html

(Bold mine.)

Gonzales knows where all the bodies are buried.

And none of them want to deal with the American justice system. Bush's Royalist Republican courtiers think they are above the law of this land...when they aren't creating their own laws to cover up their crimes.

SandyH on August 2, 2007 at 09:39 AM

dpd,

these are the same people who say we should not care that the Feds are taping our phones and our computers. If we are not doing anything wrong, we would not worry.

Well, if they were not doing anything criminal, harassing, stalking, wrong here, they would not worry about files which may end up in the hands of Tuscon authorities, Twin City authorities, German authorities, etc. A simple call and subpoena to DNC would get them everything they need to find these slime balls.

29
PamB on August 2, 2007 at 09:56 AM

Essie,

A quick and easy casserole is Del Monte Hamburger Stew.

Fry and drain one pound ground beef and a small diced onion. Salt and pepper to taste. Add a can of diced stewed tomatoes, a small can of drained mushroom pieces, a can of drained french cut green beans, and 8 oz of cooked moscacholli noodles. Add 1/2 cup red wine and heat thoroughly. Fast and easy. Chill the remaining red wine and serve with french bread.

Forget about the casserole. Just serve the red wine at the Z table and you will be a hit.

Gotta run. later.

ALSO, that road work that was being done on that bridge was being done to tweak the strength so they could increase the load limits of the trucks that are expected to carry the goods on that Mexico to Canada non-regulated trucking plan that Chimpy secretly signed into law.

O.K., Riddle me THIS...Just HOW is lowering the structural standards of American infrastructure in order to accommodate unregulated overweight Mexican trucks helping America?

repelicans....not there when you might need them, all over the joint when you don't:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republican efforts to scale back expansion of a popular children's health insurance program failed in the Senate Wednesday, as a bitter partisan battle unfolded in the House over a more generous version that includes broad Medicare changes.
art.gregg.gi.jpg

The Senate rejected Sen. Judd Gregg's amendment Wednesday.

The Senate rejected, 53-42, an amendment by Sen. Judd Gregg, R-New Hampshire, that would have cut federal payments for middle-income children and childless adults under the State Children's Health Insurance Program -- originally designed to cover only poor kids -- and limit future coverage for those populations.

Earlier, the Senate defeated, 58-26, an amendment by Sen. John Ensign, R-Nevada, that would have shifted the bill's $35 billion SCHIP increase, financed through a tobacco tax increase, into treating diseases like cancer and heart disease. It would have left the program, slated to expire on September 30, funded at its current $25 billion level for the next five years.

The action came as House Republicans slowed the chamber to a crawl through parliamentary tactics in protest of a $75 billion SCHIP bill they derided as the first step in moving toward government-run universal health care.

Russian sub plants flag under North Pole

By Guy Faulconbridge

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian explorers dived deep below the North Pole in a submersible on Thursday and planted a national flag on the seabed to stake a symbolic claim to the energy riches of the Arctic...

//news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070802/ts_nm/russia_arctic_dc

The latest reports have that sub going up the Mississippi River and planting a flag at the foot of the Gateway Arch. It appears that the folks inhabiting this river basin live in a banana republic and may not fight the Russian claim...hoping that they might get universal health care faster this way.

I have two questions about the Mississippi River Bridge collapse in Minneapolis.
What type of de-icing solution was used in that automatic system that had been installed on the bridge, and what type of inspection was done to the bridge to determine what repairs were needed on it?
Deicers can be very corrosive to steel beams, the stuff seeps through cracks in the deck and gets into the bridge joints. And the criteria for bridge inspections could determine whether the main beams were examined thoroughly or just the deck and it's supports.
It makes one wonder just how many other bridges out there are ready to collapse.

The Pug Gov. made a statement about how many bucks he saves the Citizens of MN. However, he NEVER came up with any alternative funding source.

But, HEY!! I gave you a $10.00 per YEAR tax break!

I LOVE how they always claim that they "saved" MILLIONS of dollars for the taxpayers, yet NOBODY sees a single penny of those "savings".

Well, that answers one question about that bridge.
If the state isn't paying for "improvement of roads infrastructure and bridges" and the Feds don't think they have to pay for it, that means that maintenance is deferred until the last possible minute, and the inspections of all highway infrastructure is being deferred and shortchanged.
Boy, did that Repub give the Democrats an excellent issue for the next election!

It's a lead pipe cinch that Bush will only veto any bill to increase highway funding.

He's still yapping. What is it with this guy? He must be a robot.

They both should be impeached, starting with Cheney. I had a rant on that earlier too. I love this country, I love the "common" working man and woman and I can not understand how Bush and Cheney can sell these good people out in favor of the rich and the multinational corporations....and then Bush has the nerve to call himself a "Christian"....If George Bush is what a real Christian is supposed to be, I may become a Buddhist. Dear Iraq,

These things are never easy, but… but this whole relationship isn’t working out.

I mean, what is WRONG with you people? What is so hard about setting up your region’s first-ever modern democracy involving three distinct ethno-religious groups in the midst of a military occupation and a civil war? This isn’t rocket science, Iraqis! We know this because we’ve already blown up your country because of its rocket science, and this ain’t it.

Actually, it turned out you didn’t have rocket science. My point remains: This is easier than that.

Another reason I rarely claim Indiana as my birth place! It's old news but I just saw it. Grrrr!

Source: USA Today

BP gets OK to dump mercury into Lake Michigan

A BP (BP) refinery in Indiana will be allowed to continue to dump mercury into Lake Michigan under a permit issued by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
The permit exempts the BP plant at Whiting, Ind., 3 miles southeast of Chicago, from a 1995 federal regulation limiting mercury discharges into the Great Lakes to 1.3 ounces per year.

The BP plant reported releasing 3 pounds of mercury through surface water discharges each year from 2002 to 2005, according to the Toxics Release Inventory, a database on pollution emissions kept by the Environmental Protection Agency that is based on information reported by companies.

The permit was issued July 21 in connection with the plant's $3.8 billion expansion, but only late last week began to generate public controversy. It gives the company until at least 2012 to meet the federal standard

The bridge collapse in Mineapolis is a disaster of Katrina proportio
ns. There are still about 50 autos in the river and 20 people missing.

That contemptible bastard bush had a press conference and he told the people of Mineapolis that he is praying for them and offered $5 Million. He went on to say that it is the Democrats fault for not passing his budget.

What a contemptible bastard. The bodies aren't even cold yet and he is pointing fingers away from himself. He is out of his f**king mind.
There is no way the non passage of his budget caused the bridge collapse.

The Repulsive 109th Congress is to blame for not funding the bridge. They funded Ted Steven's bridge to nowwhere for I think it was $100 Million but did not fund the bridge in Mineapolis which is expected to cost about $220 Million. This bridge along with thousands of others are part of the National Highway System. The Federal Government is responsible for the bridge and the repair and replacement responsibility.

Bush failed, the repuke senate and house failed in 2004 and 2005 when they failed to fund bridge repairs. The money for such repairs comes from the Federal Gas Tax. Bush is too cheap to use this money for the infrastructure except when it comes to repuke payback like with ted stevens.

Bush and the repuke 109th congress are responsible for the 20 plus deaths in this bridge collapse. Don't even suggest anything else.

On the ABC Radio News at 10 O'clock, they mentioned how bush was so sorry for the disaster but they said nothing about him politicizing the disaster. ABC is beyond contemptible.

Then a little after 10 O'clock, the contemptble bastard limpball's stand-in came on. He blamed the good employees of the Federal Highway Administration. There is no way we can blame them if asshole bush didn't fund their bridge replacement. Besides, the states are responsible for the design and replacement of Federal bridges and highways once they receive Federal money. These bastards will do anything to protect their kiss-ass friend bush. limpball's replacement went on and on about how Democrats are wasting time investigating gonzo and how innocent gonze is.

Sorry for the foul language, but I am LIVID with rage. I almost threw my radio throught the wall.

Democrats to conduct nationwide survey of administration of elections
as part of an ongoing commitment to protecting the rights of every American

WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As the 42nd anniversary
of the signing of the Voting Rights Act approaches, the Democratic National
Committee today announced its unprecedented 50-state election protection
effort to prepare for the 2008 election. When signing the Voting Rights Act

years after the signing of this legislation, the right to vote is still

That's what Republicans do best! They push, they aggravate, they snark, they demand, and when anyone gets so pissed about it they jump back and accuse them of being angry. It is their Modus Operandi. Believe me, I have lived amongst these Republican types for the past five years now, and they are sickening.

Furthermore, they get off on it. Somehow, and I haven't yet come to a conclusion on this, but somehow their lives are improved by simply maintaining the anger of another. Why is it that Hillary and some other candidates have sidestepped Liberals much like some Republicans sidestep the blacks. It is Liberals, who gave us Liberty, Freedom, and Democracy under Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Franklin. Why does not the Democratic Party showcase our patriot fore fathers and their Constitutional values? Who can the Republicans use except Nixon, Reagan, and Bush? They cannot use Lincoln or Eisenhower.

Hillary why do you avoid the Liberal block of Americans and side with those with Conservative segregated biases. Hillary, why do you avoid being around the Liberal values like equality and diversity?

Barrack start walking the streets of America diverse value system and show America's needy faces, do not be a Hillary puppet. The green Dem pledge is seriously flawed.
If we want to SERIOUSLY do SOMETHING about climate change and the coal based electricity plants, then, and read this, what we need to do is to close down ALL of the grandfathered-from-the-'70's dirty plants, RIGHT NOW, and replace them with IGCC plants ASAP.
This will have an impact on the amount of GGs going into the atmosphere for the next 10-15 years, whereas, saying we should build no more coal plants until sequestration has been mastered is a LICENSE for all of these dirtiest plants on the planet to keep on putting out the CO2.
So, get yer heads out dems.
Slogans are great, but pollution continues unabated.
When you decide to do something meaningful, then give me a call.

Why has Hillary been almost Republican sharing much of the Bush value system. Why does she not side against Guantanamo? Why does she not side more with Constitutional values? She is more Conservative and trying to attract the Republican right moderates. Why is she not more Presidential and question the failure of the Bush White House from Mission Accomplished with his super blunders that turned the war into a civil war quagmire. What kind of Freedom and Democracy creates a civil war where America will again put in an dictator, probably Sunni. Hillary you did not do your Iraq homework and from your fashion statements it seems you are still not doing it.

Hillary it is time to step up and show why you can be our President not another Royal pain in the future of our country.

All candidates have failed that education system in the United States. Tell US what you are going to do for all our children. In viewing an article in National Geographic/August 2007 issue, it is apparent and disgusting that the Army Corps of Engineers is as inept as FEMA. And by studied accounts they have been for decades. Example: Would you replace a levee with the same materials that came tumbling down in a Cat 3 hurricane ( sand, sea shells sealed with clay)?

The City of New Orleans never stood a chance and still doesn't. Between the Army Corps of Engineers, FEMA and the City of New Orleans government, it is sinking faster than it can be rebuilt. A Cat 5 will put what's left of the city in the Gulf of Mexico.

For everyone from Howard Dean, especially for Jacque. More good news. NO MORE STOLEN ELECTIONS>

"Last year, we put DNC staff on the ground all across the country to rebuild our party and stand up to the lies and failures of the Republican Party. The 50-State Strategy worked. Those organizers were key to our unprecedented victories up and down the ballot in 2006.

Our organizers are still on the ground in all 50 states, preparing for 2008 in every way possible. And starting this month, they are kicking off an unprecedented voter protection effort, of a scale never attempted by any organization.

While Democrats protect everyone's right to vote, Karl Rove and the Republican Party have a long history of threatening this right, working to make it harder for Americans to vote. We're going to stop them.

Protecting the right of every eligible American to vote is our party's top priority because we know that it's good for America and good for our democracy when everyone votes.

All Americans deserve to go to the polls confident that they won't be harassed or intimidated. That they won't wait hours for a ballot and that their vote will be counted fairly and accurately. Unfortunately, nearly forty-two years after the signing of the voting rights act, millions of American's are treated like criminals just for trying to vote.

So we're going to meet with every election official in the country, visit every polling place, and make sure that every American will have their vote counted-and we will do it now, instead of waiting to hear about big problems on the news on Election Day 2008.

Under the Bush Administration's politicized Justice Department we have seen an outright attack on voting rights. In their latest scheme, the Republican Administration has manipulated the mission of the Department of Justice, firing U.S. Attorneys who were unwilling to pursue phony "voter fraud" cases, and politicized the Civil Rights Division.

Over the past several years the GOP has tried everything from phone jamming schemes to vote purging to voter intimidation tactics to try and suppress the vote.

That's why this effort is so necessary. Support our organizers on the ground and help us make sure we can fix voting problems now, instead of on Election Day 2008.

http://www.democrats.org/ProtectTheVote

I've promised to build the infrastructure and develop the strategy Democrats need to fight everywhere, and this is exactly the kind of effort it takes. Our work may not be in the headlines right now, but it's how we are going to make an impact next year and in every election after that.

We all know what happened in Florida in 2000. We all know what happened in Ohio in 2004.

Help make sure it doesn't happen again in 2008.

http://www.democrats.org/ProtectTheVote

Sincerely,

Howard Dean

No it isn't. Any Republican who would have gotten to that bridge would have gone to far.

Posted by SallyTheMagnificent on August 2, 2007 at 04:21 PM

Percisely. The Republicans have been driving around in cirlces for the past 30 years (trying to protect their trust funds) amd never seem to get the country to where it should be.

They have produced a sub-standard version of what once was a world class superpower.

There was some Republican idiot on MSNBC just now saying that people may agree with Democrats now that more money needs to be spent on the infrastructure, but when they realize in a few months that that will mean raising taxes, they will change their minds.

Really?

So we just let all the bridges fall apart and bury the dead one by one as they crash to the ground? Typical Republican logic.

The dead mean nothing to these greedy Republican bastards. A crumbling infrastructure makes them proud to be Americans?

The GOP leadership remind me of the Egyptian royalty who thought they could take it all with them. I think it's time to built a pyramid up around them, so they don't get in our way in the future.

Thu Aug 2, 9:16 AM ET
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian explorers dived deep below the North Pole in a submersible on Thursday and planted a national flag on the seabed to stake a symbolic claim to the energy riches of the Arctic.

A mechanical arm dropped a specially made rust-proof titanium flag onto the Arctic seabed at a depth of 4,261 meters (13,980 ft), Itar-Tass news agency quoted expedition officials as saying.

Russia wants to extend right up to the North Pole the territory it controls in the Arctic, believed to hold vast reserves of untapped oil and natural gas.

But Canada mocked Russia's ambitions and said the expedition was nothing more than a show.

"This isn't the 15th century. You can't go around the world and just plant flags and say 'We're claiming this territory'," Canadian Foreign Minister Peter MacKay told CTV television.

Under international law, the five states with territory inside the Arctic Circle -- Canada, Norway, Russia, the United States and Denmark via its control of Greenland -- have a 320 km (200 mile) economic zone around the north of their coastline.

Russia is claiming a larger slice extending as far as the pole because, Moscow says, the Arctic seabed and Siberia are linked by one continental shelf.

China (AFP) - China insisted Thursday more than 99 percent of its exports were safe as US giant Fisher-Price announced it was recalling nearly one million Chinese-made toys over fears they might be toxic.
Commerce Minister Bo Xilai's reassurance was made public as concern seemed to be growing in Beijing over the potential fall-out from a slew of cases involving shoddily made and dangerous products from China.

"More than 99 percent of the products China exports are of good quality and are safe," Bo said in a statement posted on his ministry's website.

"We hope that the relevant sides will handle Chinese products in an objective, fair and rational manner. This should not impact the normal development of trade."

He added that "China attaches great importance to the quality and safety of its products."

The comments were posted after Fisher-Price on Wednesday said it was recalling 967,000 toys including popular Sesame Street and Dora the Explorer-branded toys sold in US stores between May and August this year.

"Paint on some of these products could contain lead in excess of permissible levels," the company said in a statement.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission warned that "consumers should immediately take the recalled toys away from children and contact Fisher-Price."

OK, let's do the math on that 99% figure quoted above. To the best of my knowledge, we have a roughly $600 billion annual trade deficit with China. If we just take 1% of the trade deficit, never mind the total Chinese manufacturing output, that's $6 billion.

To our friends in China, $6 billion of dangerous crap being imported here, no matter how cheaply made, is not going to be allowed. Your recent economic upturn is due to one reason and one reason alone, United States capital investment. Don't bite the hand that literally feeds you. You saw what happened to Japan in the 80's.

Didn't the Pentagon's public information flaks instruct the troops to pull down that Saddam statue and put up our flag (and the new Iraqi one that was designed by the GOP) in its place?

Because of the example of the Bush crime family in Iraq, Putin saw an opening and went for it...that cheeky monkey. I say we go after the Effile Tower and the Amazon river basin while they are still unprotected and not claimed by China.

Congressman Calls Bush 'A Clown'; 'Can't Stand Him'
Wed Aug 01 2007 16:33:17 ET

North Dakota's U.S. Rep. Earl Pomeroy calls President Bush a “clown” and says he “can’t stand” him in a new video posted on the Internet.

According to the GRAND FORKS HERALD, the Democratic congressman was approached by a group called Grassroots America last week as he was walking the streets of Washington, D.C.

An Internet video shows Rep. Earl Pomeroy talking to a member of Grassroots America, in which he calls President Bush a “clown.” A group member had approached him asking about whether Bush should be impeached.

As he talked on a mobile phone, two women approached him and asked him about impeaching Bush, giving statistics of people who approve of the idea.

As a camera rolled, Pomeroy is shown to be clearly agitated by their questions.

“Most of the people I represent think that’s (impeachment) a horrible idea. I’m a Democrat, and I can’t stand this president, but I’m to represent the people that I represent and they are against impeaching the president,” (emphasis added) Pomeroy said while pointing and waving his arms.

I wholehearedly agree with the gentleman from ND. My compliments to the voters of ND for electing this representative.

I think most Americans have just about bought all the cheap Chinese products they can fit in their homes at this point. And who wants to eat cardboard raviolli and poisonous shrimp?

But I don't see any reason for the Chinese to think we would want quality...when we don't even maintain our power grids, levees, and bridges. They look at how the GOP has run our country into the ground in the past 30 years and don't see a government that really cares about safety.

Give the American people what the want? This is what the moral majority wanted...crap...and that's what they are stuck with as long as they continuing voting for these GOP jerks. How many Katrinas, bridge collapses, or Walter Reed Bldg. 19 scandals will it take?

Abortion law would give fathers a say

State legislators propose change; opponents blast bill as 'extreme'

Mike Hixenbaugh
July 30, 2007

By Mike Hixenbaugh

Record-Courier staff writer

Several Ohio state representatives who normally take an anti-abortion stance are now pushing pro-choice legislation - sort of.

Led by Rep. John Adams, a group of state legislators have submitted a bill that would give fathers of unborn children a final say in whether or not an abortion can take place.

It's a measure that, supporters say, would finally give fathers a choice.

"This is important because there are always two parents and fathers should have a say in the birth or the destruction of that child," said Adams, a Republican from Sidney. "I didn't bring it up to draw attention to myself or to be controversial. In most cases, when a child is born the father has financial responsibility for that child, so he should have a say."

As written, the bill would ban women from seeking an abortion without written consent from the father of the fetus. In cases where the identity of the father is unknown, women would be required to submit a list of possible fathers. The physician would be forced to conduct a paternity test from the provided list and then seek paternal permission to abort...

//www.recordpub.com/news/article/2327981

(Bold mine.)

Now who do I hate enough that I'd like to destroy their marriage/family by listing them as a potential father?

You'd think those two/three timing Republican politicans would have thought twice before they ran with this one...especially with their sexually-challenged love lives.

If a man is found to be the father, would the woman have the power to insist that he have a mandatory snip job? You know these male tramps. They can't keep it in their pants, so it needs to be neutered?

It allows unions to buy union organized products and forces supplier of products to deal with groups of buyers that want fair prices and not to be jerked around because they are not Wall Mart. This site also may be the start of a solution to the insurance crisis by allowing the common man to band togeather and demand reasonable health insurance. Please check out eswarm and let me know what you think. They also have products where the supplier is required to donate to the Democratic party. This is such a "democratic" idea I thought you all might get a kick out of it.http://www.eswarm.com

...Nationwide, nearly 13 percent of the nation's bridges were classified as "structurally deficient" in 2004, meaning they are deteriorating, according to a report issued by the Federal Highway Administration.

Another 13 percent of bridges were classified as "functionally obsolete," meaning they are structurally sound but no longer meet transportation standards and demands...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070802/ap_on_re_us/bridge_collapse_inspections_2

OK, so roughly 1/4 of U.S. bridges are in poor condition. Think about that every time you cross a bridge in your car especially those of you, like myself, that live in "red states". One of my fellow bloggers pointed out earlier this week that we need another FDR to unite the country. It will take an FDR type solution to the problem of our crumbling infrastructure. If we do not fix our infrastructure and return this nation self-sufficiency (i.e. manufacturing and producing our bare essentials here) then we have indeed started down the road that Ancient Rome travelled more than 15 centuries ago; into the history books of former great civilizations that failed.

111
BobVADemHawk-Biden-Obama2008 on August 2, 2007 at 05:45 PM

interesting factoid. makes you wonder why our reps rarely talk about infrastructure needs:

- The American Society of Civil Engineers "extends its deepest condolences to the victims, the injured, their families and all others." The ASCE's "2005 Report Card for America's Infrastructure" found that 27% of the nation's 590,750 bridges "rated structurally deficient or functionally obsolete... However, it will cost $9.4 billion a year for 20 years to eliminate all bridge deficiencies. Long-term underinvestment is compounded by the lack of a federal transportation program."

Guess what? You may be sent to Gitmo just because the dork down the street who works for a private intel contractor doesn't like the way you mow your lawn.

Outsourcing Intelligence: How Bush Gets His National Intelligence from Private Companies

By R.J. Hillhouse, The Nation.
Posted July 31, 2007.

Private corporations are now a major staple of national intelligence and are heavily involved in producing the most important and most sensitive national security document -- the President's Daily Brief.

The unprecedented involvement of private corporations in the Iraq War has been well documented. Private soldiers working for Blackwater USA, Triple Canopy and others provide security services against military-level threats, and they regularly engage in combat.

But what is not generally known is that the secret side of the Iraq War and the larger "war on terror" is also conducted by private corporations, fielding private spies. The reach of these corporations has extended into the Oval Office. Corporations are heavily involved in creating the analytical products that underlie the nation's most important and most sensitive national security document, the President's Daily Brief (PDB).

Over the past six years, a quiet revolution has occurred in the intelligence community toward wide-scale outsourcing to corporations and away from the long-established practice of keeping operations in US government hands, with only select outsourcing of certain jobs to independently contracted experts. Key functions of intelligence agencies are now run by private corporations. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) revealed in May that 70 percent of the intelligence budget goes to contractors...

//www.alternet.org/story/57979/

In six years, 70% of intel comes from GOP campaign donners? Now that wouldn't be graft would it?

And knowing how incompetent Brownie and all the boys are, would any of this intel be any better than the stuff Cheney whipped up before committing this country to a war in Iraq for decades?

Cheney now says maybe he was a little too optimistic?

Those "snips" cut both ways. I just couldn't let that comeback go.

Allowing my Y chromosone to speak here, the legislators from Ohio have a valid point. The father should have a say as to whether a fetus is aborted if said abortion is a means of mere birth control. After all, "it takes two to tango".

However, what they propose is unenforceable for all the reasons you cite and will be until science comes up with some form of artificial womb capable of keeping a fetus viable. Then, if the mother wants to abort and the father does not, there is a reasonable alternative.

In other words, bring this measure back in about fifty years, or so, when science catches up. Then our grandchildren can debate it.

Damn, I hate prejudice!!! Coming from a single-parent <father> I can tell you that not all fathers are 'dead-beats', or 'male tramps', and really do not think I need to be neutered because through an act of passion a child was produced. Oh, how about if we rip out the ovaries of the female? She was there too, and consented, which is what I believe this discussion is about; consensual sex.

I actually agree that the father should partake and be on record of choosing to keep a child, adopt, or abort. After all, without the father their would be no child, ahead or behind. Why should the woman have the burden of this decision on her own, while the man <you pick the adjective> skates away? How many abortions are done because the woman does not have the resources, or patience to raise a child on her own? How many abortions are done because the woman wrongfully decides, on her own, that the father does not want the child? How many abortions are done because the woman decides, on her own, to save the father some kind of embarrassment (as if being a father is embarrassing)?

No! I'm sorry, I side with personal responsibility and that responsibility involves the father too. I'm sorry for the tone of my post, but you do not realize the wound in which you just poured salt. You do not realize the HELL I and my son are living because of the majority viewpoint that you just represented in your post. I mean not to demean. Please don't prejudice against fathers. I bet you have a wonderful one. It is too bad that there are a few assholes that are always in the spot light and demean the rest of us fathers.

America where we cannot have private armies but a President can have a corporate one. What rules do they abide by or are they free of Congressional oversight? Bush and Cheney gone, we're out of Iraq, environment solution implemented, health care for all, alternative energies invented produced and implemented. Do you see my point?
The democratic congress has been in office for seven months, or just over one Friedman Unit. By contrast, the Republicans maintained total control for 5 years, or 10 Friedman Units, and controlled congress for 12 years, or 24 Friedman Units.

They'll get us there. We may not get everything we desire, but it will improve. As for impeachment, the Bush administration is impeaching themselves every day that they move toward the end of their term, or not. So, in reality, we are getting that as well.

I'm not usually a superstitious person.

But doesn't it seems like every time Cheney comes out of the bunker and tells Larry King that everything is being handled legally and competently by the White House another major disaster hits this country?

Just a thought, but could private contractors doing maintenance on that bridge have had something to do with this nightmare?

It's interesting how ALL of the MSM, as well as the people writing into Cafferty/Dobbs/etc., have connected the dots as to why this country is in such bad shape and who's fault it is. The connection being made to the Iraq occupation is also naturally occurring.

Somebody has been screwing up and getting tax cuts for doing it.

Even more interesting is how Bush is now automatically getting the flack for the breakdown in our infrastructure and poor public service to citizens. He's like a magnet that draws the ire of average citizens whenever disaster strikes.

And those citizens calling in to talk shows are not letting any of the GOP Congressional incumbents hide from their 30 years of neglect either. But do the GOP get the message?

Several Republican Senators were on the air earlier today saying we need more toll roads...that only the people who use services should pay for them.

So only people who breathe the air need to pay taxes to keep it clean? Or only those who are robbed should pay for police service? Or you only pay for sewers if you flush the toilet...those that stand behind a tree get a tax break?

I have a novel idea...maybe wealthy Republicans should pay BIG TIME every time they screw the middle class?

133
SandyH on August 2, 2007 at 07:40 PM

davidual, I read your response and all I can say is, unless your ex tried to abort against your wishes, then you do not understand what this law is trying to do.

This law would drive women, forced to carry a child full term because the male wants it, to stabbing knitting needles up into themselves, taking dangerous drugs to rid themselves of the fetus, any number of things to things to get rid of it.

It is the same old story. A woman who does not want a pregnancy, will do anything she can to stop that pregnancy.

I believe your situation is different, and your son is lucky to have you, but you are unique in your situation. There are VERY few males I know who would choose to take on an infant and raise it. Very few. those I know are the ones who have paid for and driven the girl to the clinic.

"After months of congressional wrangling, the Senate passed sweeping ethics reform legislation Thursday aimed at reigning in the corrupting influence of big moneyed interests in Congress.

The bill now goes to President Bush, who the White House says has concerns and has not decided whether he’ll sign it.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) called the legislation the “most significant change in lobbying ethics in the history of the country.” And his spokesman, Jim Manley, added later that he has “zero concern” about Bush’s unease with the measure. “We have veto-proof margins,” Manley said.

The bill passed the House 411-8 and sailed through the Senate 83-14. To sustain a veto, many Republicans would have to switch their votes on a potentially volatile campaign issue after the Alaska home of Republican Ted Stevens was raided by federal agents in a wide-ranging public corruption investigation.

There are more good father's, single and married, but it's that reference of dead beat dad <and me without employment again> that sets me off, but I did not demean you. It was the reference to fathers as being irresponsible. I don't kn ow where this began, but it's reference that needs to stop because it does not help anything.

Anyway I feel for your brother-in-law and wish him the best too. As far as the legislation, what is wrong with making the father of a child stand up admit that he is the father and he accepts the mother's willingness to abort their child? The woman should not have to stand on her own and do this. Also, it may cause some embarrassment for people that are in public` positions. I say too bas to that. It takes two people to create a child, it should take two people to decide not accept a child in their life.

By the way, I also am not sour about my son's mother not wanting a child at this point in her life. Why should I be? It is her decision, and I still try to make time for my )her) son to spend time with her when she can. However, I still get the same kind of BS that you cited in your post.

The settlement Wednesday is the largest payout to date by the city for police actions during the Sept. 27, 2002, protests.

Charles Ramsey, who was police chief at the time, initially defended the arrests but later acknowledged they were improper. Police failed to order the crowds to disperse or warn that they faced arrest.

A larger class-action lawsuit is pending, covering more than 400 people who say they were illegally arrested at Pershing Park near the White House. The city previously agreed to pay more than $640,000 to settle lawsuits filed by 14 other demonstrators who said they were illegally rounded up by police.

Economic Inequality
Bill Moyers Journal

Economic inequality. As Wall Street continues to fuel wealth in America, Bill Moyers Journal examines what growing economic inequality means for the middle class and working families.
Big deals on Wall Street mean big gains for the wealthy in America, but is it at the expense of the middle class and working families? Bill Moyers talks to best-selling author Barbara Ehrenreich, who has gone undercover as a low-wage worker and as a struggling middle-class job seeker, about the real-world impact of the growing inequality gap. Also on the program, Bill Moyers interviews culture critic Clive James, whose latest book, "Cultural Amnesia," comes after more than 40 years of observing and commenting on arts, literature, culture and politics.

China Blames Climate Change for Extreme Weather
By Ben Blanchard
Reuters

Beijing - China blamed global warming on Wednesday for this year's weather extremes, which have led to more than 700 deaths from flooding and left more than seven million with little access to water.

Such extremes are likely to get worse and more common in the future, said Song Lianchun, head of the China Meteorological Administration's Department of Forecasting Services and Disaster Mitigation.

"It should be said that one of the reasons for the weather extremes this year has been unusual atmospheric circulation bought about by global warming," Song told a news conference carried live on the central government Web site (www.gov.cn).

Have you made YOUR appointment to speak with your Rep while s/he is home?

Yes, while our troops are sweating it out in 130 degree heat in Iraq, I am sure they are relieved that the two bodies that can make a difference in this brutal folly and joke of a war are enjoying a nice vacation at the lake. I can almost hear them expressing their opinions on it now...though I won't try to recreate them here!

The only good thing that can come of this is that you may get an opportunity to talk directly to your Rep about the two most important issues of the day: ending the war and impeaching Dick and Gonzo.

From The New York Times this afternoon:

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said today that he was discouraged by the departure of the major Sunni Arab bloc from Iraq’s coalition government, and noted that the Bush administration may have misjudged the difficulty of achieving reconciliation among Iraq’s sectarian factions.

In one of his bluntest assessments of the progress of the administration’s Iraq strategy, Mr. Gates said: "I think the developments on political side are somewhat discouraging at the national level. And clearly the withdrawal of the Sunnis from the government is discouraging. My hope is that it can all be patched back together."

Fatal bridge collapse: Minneapolis

Submitted by Rick Perlstein on August 1, 2007 - 11:47pm.

The Associated Press:

MINNEAPOLIS (Aug. 1) - An interstate bridge suddenly broke into huge sections and collapsed into the Mississippi River during bumper-to-bumper traffic Wednesday, killing at least six people and sending vehicles, tons of concrete, and twisted metal crashing into the river.

The New York Times:

A 2001 evoluation of the bridge, prepared for the state transportation department by the University of Minnesota Civil Engineering Department, reported that there were preliminary signs of fatigue on the steel truss section under the roadway, but no cracking. It said there was no need for the transportation department to replace the bridge because of fatigue cracking.

2001 Minnesota Department of Transportation "Fatigue Evaluation" of the bridge:

Mn/DOT does does not need to prematurely replace this bridge because of fatigue cracking, avoiding the high costs associated with such a large project.... fatigue cracking is not expected during the remaining useful life of the bridge....

The Minnesota City Pages,, January 19, 2005:

In some ways the checkered two-year reing of Tim Pawlenty has looked less like an exercise in governance than a deliberate and increasingly harrowing game of chicken. Since famously signing on to the Taxpayers League of Minnesota's "new new taxes" pledge during his 2002 gubernatorial run—a classic instance of a politician being led in shackles to exactly the spot where he meant to stand all along—Pawlenty has remained steadfast in his commitment to austerity now and forever. His first budget cycle, in 2003, found the state facing a $4.2 billion hole in his finances that Pawlenty himself, as a tax-hawking member of the state legislature, had been instrumental in creating.

Pawlenty balanced that first biennial budget with a flurry of fiscal derring-do that left many legislators and onlookers alike to sort out later what had actually happened:

• $2 billion in cuts to state services...

• more than a $1 billion taking of onetime monies, most of it from the tobacco settlement fund...

• and the juggling of millions more dollars through accounting shifts and delayed payment arrangements...

Any "delayed payment arrangements" to the Minnesota Department of Transportation?

Dodd Stands Up To O'Reilly Hotlist
by Matt Browner Hamlin [Subscribe]
Wed Aug 01, 2007 at 09:37:26 PM PDT

(From the diaries. I can't wait to see video of this. O'Reilly and Fox set out to wedge the netroots from the Democratic Party and to try and destroy its funding sources. Instead, they have helped unite us in a way I didn't think would be possible until after the primary. Way to go, Fox! -- kos)

Senator Dodd's appearance on "The O'Reilly Factor" to stand up to O'Reilly and defend his decision to attend Yearly Kos will air in just a few minutes. After finishing the interview, Senator Dodd said:

I hope that our discussion today reminds Bill that a free press is at the very heart of this nation's values. The blogosphere is enormous - and to exploit such a tiny fraction of it in such a way is ludicrous, especially considering that Bill himself has said some things in the past that he may not want distorted... Democrats aren't going to be lectured to about the crudeness of language or civility of discourse by Bill O'Reilly.

Dodd successfully exposed O'Reilly's hypocrisy, referring to offensive comments O'Reilly has made in the past including when O'Reilly suggested that Al Qaeda "go ahead" and "blow up" Coit Tower in San Francisco (Media Matters).

The word I got from our communications director Hari Sevugan, who as at the taping and had also previously issued a strong statement on O'Reilly's lack of standing to criticize Daily Kos for offensive comments was that it was a confrontational interview:

1.) O'Reilly cut the interview short. They told us seven minutes, it was around 4 1/2.

2.) It was quite confrontational -- Dodd consistently rejected the premise of O'Reilly's questions.

3.) Dodd hit all the important points: selectively picking a micro-sample of comments that are not representative; 500,000 people a day visit the site

4.) O'Reilly's bluster about Yearly Kos is about O'Reilly not liking the ideology and he ought to be honest about that

5.) Dodd called O'Reilly on making comments that were even worse, then mentioned the Coit Tower piece, when O'Reilly urged terrorists to blow it up. O'Reilly asked Dodd when he said that, and Dodd apparently gave him the date.

6.) Finally, O'Reilly ended the interview abruptly by saying that Dodd "was no Joe Lieberman."

Heh, indeedy.

I hope the interview is well received, as it sounds like Dodd did a great job standing up to Bill O'Reilly. I'd ask that if you think so and if you want to join Dodd in standing up to O'Reilly, visit http://chrisdodd.com/... and add your name to the list of people who are saying "Enough is enough" to O'Reilly's smear tactics.

NB: Crooks & Liars should have the video later. I encourage you all to watch.

Disclosure: I proudly work for Chris Dodd's presidential campaign.

Update: I'm getting word that Fox's coverage of the bridge collapse is going to pre-empt "The O'Reilly Factor" tonight. The Dodd interview is likely to air tomorrow.

So, Republicans, Where Do You Plan to Convene Now? Hotlist
by wmtriallawyer [Subscribe]
Thu Aug 02, 2007 at 10:39:38 AM PDT

Seriously, is any place safe for you guys? Anyplace in the United States you can go without the scorn of a city's citizens?

As you know, Republicans will descend on St. Paul, Minnesota next year for their convention.

And we have a collapsed bridge in Minneapolis, symbolic of the years of neglect in infrastructure spending. What a horrific reminder on the necessity of government spending, awfully staring the party of small government in the face.

My suggestion to Republicans: find a new convention site. Now.

* wmtriallawyer's diary :: ::
*

Of course, you'll have trouble finding one at this late date. But hey, how about trying?

How about New Orleans? No? Sore spot there. OK.

How about New York? You've been there last time. And I'm sure you won't mind visiting the WTC site...to be reminded that your party has STILL failed to get Osama bin Laden.

You can't go to Denver. We'll be there...sorry.

How about Detroit or San Francisco? Well considering they both just passed resolutions to impeach the current leader of your party, maybe not.

How about Albuquerque, Chicago, Los Angeles, Oakland, or Raleigh? Oh wait, those cities are currently working on those pesky impeachment resolutions as well.

Come to think of it, is there any city in the U.S. that is really going to welcome you guys with open arms?

I'm really beginning to wonder.

Because your only selling point is this:

We'll do for your town what we did for New Orleans.

Lovely legacy for you guys, really.

We blame it on Reagan.

If Ronnie hadn't insisted on that amnesty bill for illegal workers and then privatized the maintenance of everything to no-bid contractors that use unskilled labor, ran up the first deficit, disengaged all the safety regulations, and chose Bush Sr. as his running mate....then none of the bad things that have happened in this country (and in Iraq), including the coronation of the Idiot-in-Chief, would have transpired.

It all begins and ends with Reagan...and goes through Reinquest and Cheney. They are the Trinity of Incompetence that all Royalist Republicans worship. Never has there ever been so much heresy and sin.

No matter what Bush says Saturday, it will be taken by the American public as heresy. We have nothing to do with it. You cooked your own lame duck. It’s taken 30 years, but the faithful are no longer amused.

When did Bush decide to go to Minneapolis?

I was hearing all day that it was Laura who was buzzing into town tomorrow to do the honors...since nobody else in the Bush crime family can be counted on to show the proper amount of respect in a serious situation.

So was Bush orginally going to attend a fund raiser in California and play a few tunes on his guitar? Was he going to fly over the destruction and toast the dead with beer and pretzels?

I guess Karen Hughes must have called in from her vacation in Paraquay...and pointed out that this might be a Katrina moment so Spunky should at least make an appearance? It should be interesting to see how he's going to tie this into 9/11, Saddam, and Bill Clinton.

BERKELEY – Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) have been awarded the 2007 Gruber Cosmology Prize for their role in the seminal discovery that the expansion of the universe is accelerating.

Having spent eight years on supernova searches and measurements, Gerson Goldhaber, UC Berkeley physics professor, astrophysicist at the Physics Division of LBNL and a member of the Supernova Cosmology Project, recalls the moment he realized what the findings from the team meant. "We had set out to measure the deceleration of the universe, and we found it was accelerating," he said. "This was one of the eureka moments I have been privileged to observe."

The results were unexpected, as most cosmologists at the time believed that the expansion of the universe was slowing down. The big question was whether the universe would expand forever while gradually slowing down, or eventually halt its expansion and start contracting in on itself due to gravity.

The discovery of an accelerating universe turned those beliefs around, giving birth to the theory of dark energy – a mysterious, gravitationally repulsive effect that is causing the expansion to speed up with time.

It is now believed that up to three-quarters of the cosmos consists of dark energy. "I think these discoveries represent the end of the beginning for cosmology," said Riess. "The universe's constituents have been plumbed, though their nature remains a mystery."

"The discovery of the accelerating expansion of the universe, driven by some kind of unknown 'dark energy,' was tremendously exciting," said Filippenko. "In my wildest dreams, I didn't imagine that I would be involved in such an amazing breakthrough."

High Crimes and Misdemeanors
Submitted by davidswanson on Thu, 2007-08-02 23:01. Impeachment

By Lou Dubose, Washington Spectator

ELIZABETH HOLTZMAN BEGINS HER dispassionate 2006 book, The Impeachment of George W. Bush, with an account of the House Judiciary Committee’s July 27, 1974, vote to impeach Richard Nixon. She describes her difficulty saying the word “yes” when it was time for her to cast her vote, and committee chairman Peter Rodino returning to his office to cry after the committee approved the articles of impeachment. The impeachment process the former Congresswoman describes had begun in earnest in February 1974, when the House approved a Resolution of Inquiry “to investigate fully and completely whether sufficient grounds exist for the House of Representatives to exercise its constitutional power to impeach Richard M. Nixon.”

As the thirty-third anniversary of Nixon’s August 9, 1974, resignation arrives, Holtzman’s book reads like an idea whose time has arrived. The justifications for impeaching George W. Bush, or at least beginning an impeachment inquiry, are evident. Some of them have become more apparent since the publication of Holtzman’s book (which was excerpted in these pages in the Nov. 15, 2006 issue). The Bush administration’s demonstrated contempt for the law, its disregard for the constitutional role of Congress, and the deceit involved in taking the country into war in Iraq make the case to at least begin the sort of inquiry the House undertook in 1974.

Impeachment implies great risk, but the nation is already in a constitutional crisis. The executive branch is openly defying the Congress-its constitutional co-equal-establishing precedents regarding the balance of power between the executive and legislative branches. In his most recent appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales refused to answer New York senator Charles Schumer’s question regarding who ordered Gonzales to go to the hospital room of then-Attorney General John Ashcroft three years ago to persuade the gravely ill Ashcroft to authorize an intelligence program that Ashcroft and his stand-in while he was ill had already refused to authorize.

Fox News Gets Big Tax Subsidies, Then Questions Whether We Should Fund Anti-Poverty Efforts
by David Sirota | Aug 2 2007 - 3:58pm |
article tools: email | print | read more David Sirota

As you can see from the YouTube clip above, last Saturday, I appeared on Fox News' business show Bears & Bulls to address the question, "Is one of the government's job to end poverty?" The show was pegged to John Edwards (D-NC) efforts to use his presidential campaign to champion an anti-poverty agenda.

I know - it's really hard to believe that this was the premise of a question to be debated on television, even Fox. This is why I go on these shows when asked - because someone has to call out these people for what they are: elitists.

The idea that there are people out there in America who think, no, the government shouldn't do anything to combat poverty is sickening in a country that is supposed to pride itself on family values. The idea that, as you can see, some of these people get to appear on national television networks to spew their hateful ideologies is more than sickening - it is disturbing.

As you'll see in the clip, I make the point that if America - the wealthiest country on Earth - can continue giving hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks, corporate welfare, and tax code subsidies to superwealthy companies like Fox News' parent, The News Corporation, then we sure as hell have the resources to combat and eradicate poverty. You may recall that according to the New York Times, the News Corporation "paid no federal taxes in two of the last four years, and in the other two it paid only a fraction of what it otherwise would have owed" at a time when its "domestic pretax profits topped $9.4 billion."

You'll also see in the YouTube clip that the panelists all try to claim that the War on Poverty and anti-poverty programs in general have been a failure - an insult to the millions of hardworking Americans who have benefited from programs like Medicare, affordable housing grants, etc. These right-wing elitists want us to believe that because anti-poverty programs haven't 100 percent eradicated poverty (in part, because Republicans have refused to adequately fund them), that we should just abandon all efforts to alleviate poverty in pursuit of an Economic Darwinism. By this same logic, of course, we should eliminate all counterterrorism programs in America because those programs have not 100 percent eradicated terrorism.

Watch the YouTube clip here - and get ready for a wild ride.

I heard an interview on the radio today regarding the impeachment. The point made was that since the Bush administration has openly told the judicial branch to block any contempt cases based on executive privilege, there is a "prima facia" case for obstruction of justice.
Let's get the ball rolling. All that is necessary is a simple majority of the house which we already have.

My Mortgage is rising, my buying power is shrinking, no oversight on the milage new cars get, no protection from big business, the food I buy may come from china, and it may poision my children. These are dire times for alot of us, we used to be the engine that made America run, the middle class. If society wants to return to the days of wealthy, and poor, they should consider how the 1920's ended. I was informed today that my cobra health insurance was ended, the law sez I have 14 more months left to be elidgible, but unless my former employer hires a new 3rd party administrator, and tells me who they hired, the medical community wants there money. BERKELEY – The University of California, Berkeley, has been awarded $750,000 to conduct, along with project partner groups, the first real-world tests of and research with an automaker-produced, plug-in hybrid electric passenger vehicle (PHEV), the campus's Institute of Transportation Studies announced today (Wednesday, July 25).

The prototype PHEV system is designed to operate in a manner similar to that of the current Toyota Prius, switching from pure-electric mode to gas-engine mode to a blended gas-electric mode. According to a statement by Toyota, "the big advantage is that the PHEV's prototype battery pack is capable of storing significantly higher levels of electricity supplied by 'plugging into the grid' for periodic recharging sessions.

"With significantly more electric power in reserve, the vehicle will be capable of operating in pure-electric mode for longer periods of time and at much higher speeds than the current Prius. This will result in substantial gains in fuel economy ... over current conventional hybrid systems."

BERKELEY – A review of software source code led by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, has found security holes that would leave electronic voting machines vulnerable to attack.

The source code report was released today (Thursday, Aug.2) by California Secretary of State Debra Bowen as part of an unprecedented "Top-to-Bottom Review" of electronic voting systems.

The researchers said that many of the security problems they encountered were fairly similar across the three systems.

"The most severe problem we found was the potential for viruses to be introduced into a machine and spread throughout the voting system," said Wagner. "In the worst-case scenario, these malicious codes could be used to compromise the votes recorded on the machines' memory cards or render the machines non-functional on election day."
The researchers said it is possible for viruses on one machine to spread to an entire county's system when its votes are being uploaded to a central computer for tabulation, although they did not demonstrate this in their review.

"We found flaws that could allow an attacker to defeat all the technological countermeasures in the software," said Wagner. "Unfortunately, these vulnerabilities are not trivial implementation bugs that can be patched up. The software just wasn't designed with fundamental safeguards in place to make them resilient to intrusion. It was troubling to discover this."

The researchers acknowledge that a real-world hacker would need access to an electronic voting machine to discover these security flaws. "Getting a machine may be difficult, but it is not impossible. Maintaining the physical security of the voting equipment can be a challenge when there are tens of thousands of these machines across the country," said Wagner. "You don't have to be an election official or employee of the manufacturer to get your hands on one."

Indeed, recent news reports and voter watchdog groups have noted that electronic voting machines have been put on sale and purchased through eBay.

i see the trolls are nesting nicely with each other here late at night. what a fine flock of strange birds they are.

meanwhile their heroes big adventure continues:

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Four U.S. soldiers were killed in Baghdad, the U.S. military said on Friday, underlining U.S. President George W. Bush's grim prediction of "a very difficult August" for U.S. troops in Iraq.

The military said a roadside bomb killed three soldiers on patrol in eastern Baghdad on Thursday during operations targeting Shi'ite and Sunni militants. Eleven others were wounded. A fourth soldier died in combat in a western district.

Bush has sent an extra 30,000 troops to Iraq, despite strong opposition at home, to help quell unrelenting sectarian violence and give Iraq's leaders time to achieve a political deal to promote national reconciliation.

His new military strategy has had some success but at a cost -- May was the deadliest month in 2-1/2 years for U.S. troops with 126 killed, and more than 100 died in both April and June.

The July death toll, initially put at 74, was welcomed by U.S. commanders as a possible sign that the military build-up was bearing fruit. But by Friday the toll had climbed to 81 on the icasualties.org Web site, on a par with February and March.

U.S. commanders say they expect higher casualties as more troops confront Shi'ite militias and Sunni insurgents in areas they had previously stayed out of.

In May, Bush predicted that Iraqi militants, particularly Sunni Islamist al Qaeda, would attempt to influence the U.S. debate on the war by launching attacks ahead of a military assessment of the strategy due in September.

"It could be a bloody ... it could be a very difficult August," he said. Five U.S. soldiers have now died in the first two days of the month...

----this from the asshole who told pat robertson there would be no casualties during his big adventure----time for him and cheney and rummy to get over, over there and walk the line----

Senate Passes Children’s Health Bill, 68-31

By ROBERT PEAR
Published: August 3, 2007

WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 — The Senate defied President Bush on Thursday and passed a bipartisan bill that would provide health insurance for millions of children in low-income families.

The vote was 68 to 31. The majority was more than enough to overcome the veto repeatedly threatened by Mr. Bush. The White House said the bill “goes too far in federalizing health care.”

But Senator Max Baucus, Democrat of Montana and chief sponsor of the bill, said, “Millions of American children have hope for a healthier future tonight.”

The bill would increase spending on the popular Children’s Health Insurance Program by $35 billion over the next five years.

“Covering these children is worth every cent,” said Senator Orrin G. Hatch, Republican of Utah, who helped create the program 10 years ago.

The House passed a much larger bill on Wednesday, presenting negotiators with a formidable challenge in trying to work out differences between the two measures.

Still, the strong commitment to the issue by Democratic leaders virtually guarantees that they can work out a compromise before Sept. 30, when the program is set to expire. But that compromise is likely to be unacceptable to Mr. Bush.

If Mr. Bush vetoes the bill, the future of the program would quickly become an issue in 2008 campaigns for Congress and the White House, in the context of a broader debate about universal coverage for health care.

will bush kill the kids?

BAGHDAD -- As the U.S. military attempts to pacify Iraq so its leaders can pursue political reconciliation, Iraqi and Western observers say Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his inner circle appear increasingly unable to pull the government out of its paralysis.

At times consumed by conspiracy theories, Maliki and his Dawa party elite operate much as they did when they plotted to overthrow Saddam Hussein -- covertly and concerned more about their community's survival than with building consensus among Iraq's warring groups, say Iraqi politicians and analysts and Western diplomats.

In recent weeks, those suspicions have deepened as U.S. military commanders have begun to work with Sunni insurgents, longtime foes of the Shiite-led government, who have agreed to battle the group al-Qaeda in Iraq.

maliki's party has alot in common with the repelicans; insular, paranoid, in the tank

Go one step further, and call the DNC and ask if you can be hired to watch over the elections. The DNC or the RNC for that matter, can't do a damn thing about the voting systems.

HR 811 is a federal mess...worse than HAVA 2002.
I want the government to quit screwing with the systems until they have comprehensive studies completed (I suggest vote by mail, like the state of Oregon)and have a system that can be used nationwide.

They can't even get the bugs worked out of the statewide voter registration system.

Oh, and btw, my tiny hamlet purged 1200 voters...legally!!!

Voter education and pollworker training is where the money needs to be spent, not on hiring young guns at the DNC to watch me do my job. (I've got 25,000 voters here that do that!)

so, when do we get our children chipped for their universal health care?

253
Esmeralda on August 3, 2007 at 08:05 AM

esmeralda, i don't believe kids are chipped in any of all the other industrialized nations that provide kids health care. if fact the really big chipping of kids in the good ol'usa has more to do with lays than with intel...:)

UNITED NATIONS - Nearly 100 countries speaking at the first U.N. General Assembly meeting on climate change signaled strong support for negotiations on a new international deal to tackle global warming.

There was so much interest among worried nations — many facing drought, floods and searing heat — that the two-day meeting was extended for an extra day so that more countries could describe their climate-related problems, how they are coping, and the help they need.

"We now have the momentum," General Assembly President Sheikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa told delegates at the closing session Thursday evening. "What we do with this is more important. We need to ensure that we agree an equitable, fair and ambitious global deal to match the scale of the challenges ahead."

will bush the belligerent be there?

Morning gregg, rj and Essie,

Speaking of measuring offices for drapes, we must get Alcatraz ready to open for business. They have plenty of empty cells for the 33 repuke lock-step senators, chimp, vice chimp and most of the white house staff.

At Nuremburg it took several years to complete the prosecutions of the Nazi war criminals. In the meantime they kept them locked up until their trials. Our war criminals deserve no less. Besides chimp and vice chimp are detaining a lot of "al qaeda" "criminals" at Gunatanamo.

Old Harry better keep the store open during August. He said he would.

OleHippieChick on August 3, 2007 at 08:13 AM

gregg,

It appears to me that bush is just giving lip service to Global Warming. He has no intention of depriving his rich friends and his crime boss father of even one Dollar. It is just a big show to ensure his "base" votes repuke. His base is really are BASE. They are the dregs of American society.

Is there a website (I wonder) that keeps track of who a person votes for (by the voter ID) because I don't remember if I actually voted for Dukakis.

Posted by Dawnie on August 3, 2007 at 12:02 AM

sorry dawn, I'm not picking on you, but you have me roflmao this morning.

back then it was punch card ballots. didn't you or the pollworker tear off your stub number before you deposited your ballot into the locked ballot box? that would have made it a secret ballot. after the polls were closed and the ballots taken back to election central, the cards would have been placed in a card reader and the light going through the holes constitutes a vote. Nobody could pluck a ballot card out of the stack and say, "gee, looky here! Dawn voted for Dukakis."

Why don't you (and everyone else) sign up to be a pollworker in your county? I know we are always needing pollworkers. Those of you here that are so politically involved (and no, most pollworkers are not connected...I had a democratic pollworker once tell me that she knows everything that is going on, that she watches fox news!)
should give it a try or two.

Morning OleHippieChick,

I think Harry should keep the store open. No telling what bush and cheney will pull in August. They will likely attack Iran then chimp can appoint himself dictator. They will likely appoint all kinds of criminal cronies to government positions. cheney might even attack Los Angeles or San Francisco to prevent the opening of Alcatraz which would be his future home for the rest of his life.

i posted this yesterday but i thought it worth a repost this morning. there are so many better things to do with the wealth of this nation than to make bullets:

- The American Society of Civil Engineers "extends its deepest condolences to the victims, the injured, their families and all others." The ASCE's "2005 Report Card for America's Infrastructure" found that 27% of the nation's 590,750 bridges "rated structurally deficient or functionally obsolete... However, it will cost $9.4 billion a year for 20 years to eliminate all bridge deficiencies. Long-term underinvestment is compounded by the lack of a federal transportation program."

bbl. Got to walk the dogs. It's 67 here again this morning and it rained a little last night (It rained hard for about 5 minutes). Very unusual. Global Warming don't you know.

263
Johnedwrd on August 3, 2007 at 08:25 AM

Thanks for posting that again gregg. At the ASCE site they have the complete report card I believe. ASCE.com I think. It includes water, sewer, storm systems, dams, levees and a lot more. They all have failing grades.

It is just a matter of time before our water is contaminated and unfit to drink and we have raw sewage dumped directly into rivers. We have already seen a few levees break.

"young guns"
I guess you didn't mean me since I don't own or believe I need a weapon to survive in the USA, yet.

lol oh yea I'm not young either (except to my MOM)

We have great machines in these blue Asheville mountains. I wish the rest of the country would or could get their act together as well.

Yes education is the key. Total and complete. Not half assed or compiled and expressed by PUGS. They only deal in HALF trues and partial stories.

I don't trust they even KNOW what real education is all about. They've become nothing but troglodytes in my mind probably forever thanks to GWDOUCHEbag!

Jaq

go ahead and laugh - I don't remember a LOT about back then. I've had a long expanded (many states and countries) life so far. Many details never to be recalled. LOL

Maybe if I had stayed in one place and studied only one subject I'd be able to recall MOST of it by now. And then again maybe not. LOL
