Buenos días. Les habla Walter Tejada, Vice Presidente de la Junta de Gobierno del Condado de Arlington en Virginia, a nombre del Partido Demócrata.
Esta semana pasada se vió el gran contraste entre los dos principales partidos políticos y sus candidatos presidenciales.
Los candidatos republicanos no dejaron duda de que el Partido Republicano continuará a montar campañas basadas en el odio y el miedo. Este pasado jueves, el candidato republicano Duncan Hunter presentó su nuevo equipo de consejeros políticos en Carolina del Sur. Uno de ellos, la ex presidente del Partido Republicano del condado, dijo durante la rueda de prensa que una mujer indocumentada con tres hijos llegó a su oficina esta semana para pedir consejo legal gratuito para un niño abusado. Con orgullo, la consejera dijo a la audiencia que le había dicho que su mejor opción era volver a México. La situacion no se detuvo ahí. Otro de los nuevos consejeros de Hunter se ha hecho famoso con sus comentarios despectivos sobre los musulmanes y budistas.
Y Hunter no es un caso aislado en el Partido Republicano. Otro candidato presidencial, Mitt Romney, recientemente ganó el silencio y posiblemente el apoyo del militante anti-inmigrante Tom Tancredo, después de que decidió que estaba dispuesto a considerar la posibilidad de negarle la ciudadanía a los inmigrantes indocumentados nacidos en los Estados Unidos. Hasta el Senador John McCain, con el fin de motivar a los votantes conservadores, pasó parte de su semana haciendo público su fuerte oposición a la amnistía.
No quedo duda de que el partido republicano no entendió el mensaje de los votantes en noviembre. El pueblo americano no quiere el odio y el miedo, lo que quiere es la esperanza y la oportunidad. Sobre todo, quieren políticos que entiendan que cuando un niño esta en peligro, la política debe ser lo ultimo que se considera.
La diferencia entre los partidos también se vió esta semana cuando los candidatos presidenciales demócratas se reunieron con un grupo diverso de votantes en Nevada esta semana, que incluyó a hispanos, afro-americanos, sindicalistas, rancheros y empresarios. Nuestros candidatos mostraron que comparten los valores del pueblo americano y tocaron una variedad de temas, incluyendo el hacerle accesible el cuidado médico a todos en Estados Unidos, como fortalezar a nuestra fuerza laboral, como crear mayores oportunidades para las familias trabajadoras, y como sacar a nuestras tropas valientes de la guerra civil en Irak.
Además el campo del Partido Demócrata es tan diverso como el pueblo americano. Los demócratas pueden tener orgullo de la diversidad de sus candidatos presidenciales y de lo fuertes que son todos los candidatos, entre quienes puede estar el primer Presidente afro-americano, la primera mujer presidente, o el primer presidente hispano.
La diferencia entre los partidos es real y significante. El partido demócrata comparte los valores de nuestra comunidad. Pero sobre todo, los demócratas tenemos una visión verdadera para el futuro de los Estados Unidos que abra las puertas de la oportunidad y que celebrará la gran diversidad del país.

Good Morning, this is Arlington County Board Member Walter Tejada for the Democratic Party.
This past week showed the startling contrast between the two major political parties and their candidates to become America's next President.
The Republican presidential candidates made it clear that the Republican Party will continue to campaign on hatred and fear. On Thursday, Republican candidate Duncan Hunter introduced his new team of political advisers in South Carolina. One of those advisors, a former Chairwoman of the local county Republican Party, told the audience how an undocumented immigrant with three children had gone to her office this week asking for free legal help for an abused child. She told the woman that the best thing to do was to get back to Mexico, and she was proud of that. It didn't stop there. Another of Hunter's new advisors is known for making denigrating comments about Muslims and Buddhists.
Hunter was not alone. Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney recently won the silence and possibly the support of anti-immigrant crusader Tom Tancredo, after deciding he would be open to denying citizenship to the children of undocumented immigrants born inside the United States. Even John McCain spent part of his week emphasizing his strong opposition to amnesty in order to motivate conservative voters.
It's clear now that the Republican Party didn't get the message voters sent in November. The American people don't want hatred and fear, they want hope and opportunity. Above all, they want politicians who understand that when a child is in danger, politics should be the lowest priority.
The difference was clear when the Democratic Party's presidential candidates spoke to a diverse group of voters in Nevada this week, including Hispanics, African Americans, union members, ranchers, and entrepreneurs. Our candidates showed they share the values of the American people, and addressed a variety of issues including making health care available to every American, strengthening America's workforce, expanding opportunities for working families, and getting our brave troops out of the Iraqi civil war. And the Democratic Party's field is as diverse as the American people. Democrats can be proud of our strong and diverse field of presidential candidates, among whom it's possible that the first woman, the first African-American, or the first Hispanic could be elected President of the United States.
The difference between the two political parties is real, and significant. The Democratic Party shares the values of our community. But above all, Democrats have a real vision for America's future: one that opens the doors of opportunity, and that embraces our country's great diversity.
This is Walter Tejada urging you to continue to reject the politics of hatred and fear.
