Baldacci Opposes Raising His Pay

Maine Democratic Governor Baldacci will gladly remain the lowest paid Governor in the country for the betterment of his state.

Gov. John Baldacci issued a statement Tuesday saying he would veto any legislation that seeks to raise the governor's pay.

"Until teacher's salaries, health care and roadways have been taken care of, the governor will not receive a pay increase," he said.

A legislative committee on Monday voted 7-3 to support a bill to raise the salary of the governor from $70,000 a year to about $150,000.

Maine's governor is currently the lowest paid in the country.

Baldacci isn't eligible to receive a pay raise, because the state constitution bars a sitting governor from getting a pay hike.

"Let me make myself clear that I will veto any pay increase," he said Tuesday.

Honor and integrety. Democratic values.
